O Impacto do modelo de liderança do diretor na proficiência dos estudantes da rede pública de ensino do município do Rio de Janeiro

Resumo

Purpose: The purpose of this work is to evaluate, by means of the Theories on School Effectiveness and School Leadership, how the principal's leadership model impacts the proficiency of 5th and 9th grade students at public schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the year 2017. Design/Methodology: The research used from contextual questionnaires of the National System for Evaluation of Basic Education (Saeb) to identify different dimensions of the principal's leadership considering, in the process, the Theories of School Effectiveness, Instructional Leadership and Transformational Leadership through Optimal Scaling and Principal Component Analysis techniques. Subsequently, the correlations of these components were analyzed with the average proficiency in Languages and Mathematics of the 5th and 9th grade classes in the public school system in the city of Rio de Janeiro in 2017. Findings: The evidence shows that some dimensions of the principal's leadership present in the Instructional and Transformational Leadership models have small contribution in improving the proficiency in Portuguese Language and Mathematics of 5th and 9th grade classes in the public school system in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Research Limitations: The main limitation is that the data collection instruments present in the national exams (such as the contextual questionnaires of the Saeb) are not originally developed for analyses of the dimensions of leadership, as proposed in this research. Therefore, the formation of the questionnaires does not necessarily consider the Theoretical Framework on School Effectiveness and School Leadership. Practical Implications: The identification of the different dimensions of effective director leadership and its impact on proficiency can provide important inputs for the improvement of educational policies related to this professional. Social Implications: The research can reveal important aspects of the principal's leadership, contributing to the development of educational strategies focused on improving the proficiency of students in public schools in Rio de Janeiro. Originality: There are still few studies that seek to identify, through the Saeb microdata, the relationship between the principal's leadership dimensions and student proficiency.
