O Ensino superior e o processo de transfronteirização na aglomeração urbana transfronteiriça do Iguaçu

Resumo

This article investigates the relationship between the expansion of higher education and cross-border aspects in the cross-border urban agglomeration of Iguaçu (aglomeração urbana transfronteiriça do Iguaçu – Auti), located on the border between Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. Medicine courses in the Paraguayan cities of Auti and the Federal University of Latin American Integration (Universidade Federal da Integração Latino-Americana – Unila) have driven the growth of the higher education services sector in the region since 2010. Geographical proximity, the possibility of continuing to live in a Brazilian city and the offer of affordable tuition fees attract students from different regions of Brazil to study medicine at one of the private educational institutions on the Paraguayan side of the agglomeration, while thousands of students from Latin American and the Caribbean countries are attracted by the possibility of attending one of the twenty-nine undergraduate courses at Unila. The article discusses how the characteristic factors of a cross-border area contributed to the formation of a higher education pole, and also how the expansion of this sector has reflected in the intensification of the Auti’s cross-border process.
