Resumo

Objective – This study aims to evaluate, in Brazil, the effectiveness of the reputation of a higher education institution on the increasing income of postgraduated students in specialization e-learning courses. Methodology – It was analysed the evolution of the income of professionals who enrolled and completed e-learning specialization courses in the area of management in two higher education institution with different positions regarding to price and reputation. The incomes of the postgraduated students were compared through the differences-in-differences method, to which the growth of the evaluated incomes corresponded to the individual himself (both the treaty and control), based on the microdata of RAIS. Results – It was shown that there is no significant difference between the effectiveness of the
e-learning specialization courses to the income of postgraduated students due to the reputation of the higher education institution, except for an exclusive difference to the group of “celetistas”, and in a very limited short-term. Limitations – The main limitation of the research was the impossibility of identifying the
academic education of the researched individuals in the RAIS databases, which limited the quality of the selection of controls, because it was not possible to affirm that all of them did not have any sort of postgraduate course at the time of pairing. Practical contributions – Higher education institutions can evaluate how stakeholders react to the quality signalling they seek to pass, and with this input plan market segmentation strategies. Social contributions – Institutional intermediaries, such as rankings publications, may be motivated to improve the evaluation criteria of the higher education institutions and their
courses, which would help reduce information asymmetry and bring the interests closer to the different stakeholder’s groups. Originality – The use of the endogenous variable – income – based on secondary data and not with a questionnaire answered by the postgraduated students themselves is a differential of this research in the higher education sector in Brazil.
