Resumo

This research investigates the social function of reading as a catalyst for transformation in diverse, yet particularly challenging, environments. Through an ethnography at the 21st Brazilian Army Field Artillery Group (21st GAC), the "Laboratório Inquietações Contemporâneas" (Contemporary Inquietudes Laboratory) was implemented as a research-action methodology. The study, with theoretical frameworks grounded in Michèle Petit, who explores reading as art and resistance to adversity, and in Roger Chartier, who understands it as a social practice of active appropriation, utilized poetic texts to stimulate reflection, self-knowledge, and critical expression among military. The results demonstrate that the Laboratory created a safe space for vulnerability, generating positive impacts, particularly on the participants' mental health, and fostering the training of new cultural mediators. The research culminates in the development of a manual intended to disseminate this methodology. While structurally designed for military settings, it is adaptable to any civilian context, thereby reconceptualizing reading as a valuable resource for human well-being and the creation of meaning across diverse contexts.
