Resumo

The freshwater consumption for cooling processes is essential for production and demands large volumes in the chemical and petrochemical industry making it a relevant consumer in the public freshwater market. The literature review demonstrates the dilemmas facing humanity regarding water, and how water availability directly impacts quality of life and economic and social development. Because of the dependency relationship that mankind has with water, to feed, hydrate, sanitize and produce consumer goods, the increase in demand for water grows rapidly, reinforcing the emerging need to implement a more efficient management in water use, in a scenario where the uses of water for irrigation and industrial processes are pointed out as those that most compete with the human supply. The aim of this study is to understand how a wastewater treatment company, Aquapolo, contributes to ensure the supply of the Capuava petrochemical complex, in a context of increasing water stress in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. Using the case study methodology, the case analysis indicates that the wastewater reuse technique in petrochemical industries located in industrial centers in large urban centers contributes to the reduction of competition in the use of drinking water between industry and society, in conserving water resources and improving the environment, because it minimizes the need for water abstraction in bodies of water in other watersheds. Such alternatives shall be better analyzed, and their positive aspects used as models to be replicated, respecting local needs and specificities.
