Resumo
The aim of this dissertation is to understand if teleworking influences breastfeeding after the maternity leave period. The time period studied is after the maternity leave, as it is the moment of returning to work. Therefore, the goal is to assess whether teleworking is a tool capable of assisting in the continuation of breastfeeding until the child reaches two years of age, which is the minimum age recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for breastfeeding. The qualitative method was used in constructing this relationship to answer the research question. By collecting primary data that described facts and phenomena through semistructured interviews, a descriptive exploratory approach is necessary. The phenomenon of breastfeeding at work was emphasized, as well as how the interviewees understand and experience it. Three propositions were put forward to help answer the research problem: educational level contributes to a positive decision to breastfeed and continue until 2 years old – Proposition 1 (P1); the physical presence of the baby stimulates breastfeeding – Proposition 2 (P2); and teleworking prevents early weaning – Proposition 3 (P3). P1 and P2 were found to be supported by the collected data, while P3 was not. An important research finding was revealed: teleworking alone is not sufficient to maintain breastfeeding for a civil servant woman. A support network was identified as a requirement for the feasibility of teleworking during breastfeeding. Nevertheless, the results converged to indicate teleworking as a facilitator of breastfeeding, mainly by promoting greater presence and closeness between mothers and children. Study limitations relate to the group of interviewed mothers, who are public servants, all with higher education and who can effectively work remotely. Professionals who necessarily must commute, such as drivers, for example, were not considered. The study is a relevant topic from the perspective of health and work. Despite limitations to certain careers and professions, teleworking during breastfeeding can theoretically be replicated in various sectors of Public Administration. For society and public health, the public value generated by the continuation of breastfeeding until two years of age may be able to justify, even, eventual parental leave for a period of 101 weeks, as it occurs in Norway. For Public Administration and organizations such as the Federal Public Defender's Office, the result can be translated into female employees who are more integrated into the family environment at the beginning of motherhood, without losing productivity, due to a lower level of anxiety and greater satisfaction resulting from the coexistence of teleworking and lactation.
