Resumo
Purpose – This study intends to confirm if the resignation by low performance is delayed in the companies in Brazil. If so, identify the reasons why and its impacts in the organizational environment, analyzing mainly the intangible and non-financial costs resulting due to the issue. Design/Methodology – The research has an exploratory purpose and is based on case studies reported in five interviews of human resources executives from large national and multinational companies. Findings – It has been confirmed that there are several cases of procrastination in the dismissal of employees with low performance, which generates tangible and intangible costs for the organization. This is due to several factors, among them the Brazilian culture, which favors a paternalistic management. Based on that the confrontation that would be generated by difficult conversations like true feedback and resignation communication becomes a challenge for leadership. Research limitations – There are limitations due to the position of the interviewees, since people in strategic positions tend to have a more veiled speech. However, there was confirmation of the taboo in deciding and applying a layoff for poor performance and the mapping of possible related damages. In the future, it would be interesting to increase the sample of people/companies involved in the research. Practical implications – Because of this study, managers can better understand the costs generated by delay or non-dismissal and fail to procrastinate, or may apply suggested alternatives to address the problem. Most importantly, the manager would be aware of and accountable to all team members and the organization, making an effort to actually make the right decision.
Social implications – With the identification of the problem, not only the performance of the manager can be more effective, but also HR and the organization as a whole. It is important to reinforce that the responsibility of a company and with society is its perenniality, to provide jobs, economic benefits and more. Originality – This is a recent topic, this being an exploratory study that analyzes the procrastination in layoffs for low performance in Brazil.
