Estação da memóriaum estudo das entidades de preservação ferroviária do estado do Rio de Janeiro

Resumo

This research deals with memory, having as observation field legally constituted civil railroad preservation entities, which call upon public authority to preserve railroad memory. In the initial survey, 16 entities were identified, of which two were chosen to deepen the analysis: Associação Fluminense de Preservação Ferroviária (Rio de Janeiro´s Railroad Preservation Association) and Movimento de Preservação Ferroviária (Railroad Preservation Movement), both in Rio de Janeiro. The proposal is to show how these groups get structured around this memory. The consolidation debate of this concept, as an established category, is deepened and reconstruction, in the light of current debates, is suggested. Two ways by which these groups intend to preserve railroad memory are approached in detail: touristic trains operation and cultural equity. In order to reach their objectives, these groups use several strategies that include from the community´s inclusion to the denouncement to the agencies responsible for the Country´s equity as well as the State´s right to preserve railroad memory. In these groups, political and academic participation contribute with each other. One of the hypotheses is that RFFSA`s (Federal Railroad Network) extinction intensified the creation of these entities under the excuse of the railroad worker´s loss of identity. The participant observation method is used, as well as oral History and the Internet - a common tool in these groups´ data divulgation and storage. Theoretical references are represented in the debates on memory, cultural and industrial equity, social movements, museums and tourism. It is concluded that entities are examples of the ways in which civil society is organized in the presence of political institutions. Rio de Janeiro´s entities contribute to the preservation of a part of what may represent a given railroad memory.
