Resumo
This study aims to investigate sexual violence against women during the Brazilian Business-Military Dictatorship (1964-1985), interpreting it not only as a mechanism of political repression but, primarily, as an expression of gender oppression. It is based on the premise that the female body has historically been instrumentalized as a symbolic space of domination, where sexual violence transcends physical aggression and operates as a strategy of control, humiliation, and dehumanization, upheld by patriarchal structures inherent to authoritarian contexts. In order to analyze sexual violence as a central instrument of political repression, highlighting its role in the subordination of women during the dictatorship, the research draws upon testimonies of former political prisoners obtained through semi-structured interviews, historical documents from national archives, secondary sources from electronic and visual media, and the final report of the National Truth Commission (CNV). Through qualitative and quantitative analysis of victims’ narratives, the study infers the multidimensional impacts of such violence, both on the lives of directly affected women and on subsequent generations, thereby broadening the understanding of sexual crimes committed during the period. The ultimate goal is to contribute to a critical reassessment of transitional justice approaches regarding gender issues. Thus, the work seeks to elucidate how these practices were marginalized in collective memory and transitional justice processes, revealing the relativization of women’s experiences within the official historical narrative.
