Resumo

Objective: With the intention to identify which obstacles should be overcome for women to ascend to high ranking management positions with the Attorney General’s Office, we intend to investigate in which way female federal public servants of this institution managed to reach these leadership/management positions, which difficulties they faced/face, if the institution offer mechanisms of support, if there is a female disposition to occupy leadership positions, how female servants relate to each other, as well as which benefits the female leadership can bring to the institution.
Methodology: The research brought a qualitative approach based on semi-structured
interviews applied to female public servants of the federal public attorney practice through the snowballing technique, using the method of content analysis to elaborate the categories and subcategories with the responses of the interviewees. Results: The analysis of the interviews revealed that the interviewees have a very busy routine
and that uniting the private life with the work life in high ranking management positions requires a lot of effort and dedication, also demonstrating/showing that there is still an organizational culture that values more management characteristics considered “masculine”. This culture ends up creating an invisible barrier for the women, who constantly need to prove their compentency and skills, having to deal with gender stereotypes and judgements that put them in disadvantage, favoring the emergence of negative attitudes and competition among women within the organization. The interviewees recognize this manner of female dispute, but
adopt practices of empowerment and sorority to combat such conducts. Limitations: Because this a research with members and female career servants of the Attorney
General’s Office and most positions of this institution are concentrated in the midwestern region, most those indicated for the interview were assigned to that region, as well as it was difficult to find women occupying management positions in the northern and southern regions, these regions being the most distant regions of the country. We believe that the temporal factor limited the exploration of the field to be researched. The interview model conducted via the Microsoft Teams application also limited the research in the sense that the interviews were not carried out in person which hindered some perceptions that could have been captured in a faceto-face interview.
