Resumo

This work evaluates the impact of mergers and acquisitions on the quality and on the total enrollment and entrant students on undergraduate courses offered by Higher Education Institutions (HEI) acquired by educational business chains. The analysis of the effects was splitted into three parts: (i) assessment of the average effect of the acquisition, (ii) evaluation of its dynamic effect, and (iii) assessment by acquiring chain. Regarding the first one, acquisition accounts for a positive effect on the Preliminary Course Concept (PCC), on the percentage of PhD teachers and also on the percentage of teachers with partial or full time dedication. As to the dynamic effect of the acquisition, the results indicate a positive effect on the (PCC) in the second year after the acquisition, a positive effect on the percentage of PhD teachers in the first two years after the acquisition and a positive effect on enrollment and entrant students after two years of the acquisition. Moreover, the analysis indicates that the acquiring chain is relevant for assessing the effect of the acquisition, that is, the results may be different depending on who buys the HEI. The impacts that were found are valid employing different model specifications. These results indicate that the analysis of mergers should evaluate possible effects of acquisitions on the quality, which is an incipient topic in economic literature.
