Resumo

This dissertation investigates how gender shapes the emotional performance of political actors in parliamentary debates. Drawing on theories of role incongruity, gendered authority, and the social construction of emotions, the study examines whether men and women express different emotional profiles depending on the thematic context of debate. Using a corpus of 71,374 speeches from the UK House of Commons in 2019, the research applies a mixed-methods design that integrates topic modeling (LDA) to identify debate contexts, the NRC Emotion Lexicon to measure emotional content, and statistical tests to compare emotional expression across genders. The findings show that gendered patterns of emotion are not uniform: women express more fear and sadness in crisis debates, but do not display higher trust or anticipation in social policy, and express slightly more anger than men in security and economic debates. Qualitative validation confirms that these differences are driven by the substantive framing of each debate rather than inherent emotional styles. The study contributes to the literature by showing that gendered emotional performance is situational, context-dependent, and shaped by thematic framing rather than stable gender stereotypes. It also highlights the importance of integrating computational text analysis with qualitative interpretation to understand how emotions operate in legislative politics.
