Resumo

This study aims to analyze the socioeconomic and political profile of members of Congress from the four largest delegations in the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies: Bahia, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. The findings reveal a predominance of parliamentarians belonging to the traditional political elite: men, white, right-wing, with established political careers, and originating from the highest socio-occupational strata. This indicates membership to groups with high occupational, educational, and economic prestige in society. By incorporating variables such as political capital and ideological spectrum into the analysis, it is possible to identify important exceptions to the hegemonic profile – characterized by the dominance of political capital from within the political field itself and by right-wing orientation – especially when considering social markers such as gender and race. In this context, female deputies, particularly Black women, stand out for mobilizing political capital derived from social movements more frequently and for being more closely associated with the political left. These findings suggest that the presence of these parliamentarians creates space for the inclusion of political trajectories that differ from those of the traditional political elite in the Chamber of Deputies.
