Resumo

This dissertation examines the trajectory of General Sylvio Frota during the 1970s, with emphasis on the period in which he served as Brazil’s Minister of the Army, from 1974 to 1977, and on the political crisis that led to his dismissal in October 1977. The analysis extends to the work Ideais Traídos, written by Frota beginning in 1978 and published in 2006. The research is based on the hypothesis that the book represents an attempt at political intervention and symbolic reaffirmation of his trajectory, in response to his exclusion from the decision-making core of the military regime established in 1964. In the book, Frota portrays himself as a loyal defender of the regime’s founding principles, in contrast to the political course taken by President Ernesto Geisel. The study adopts a qualitative and interpretative approach, using the autobiography as a historical and political source, and engages with debates on memory, identity, and legitimacy. It seeks to understand how Ideais Traídos contributes to the construction of a narrative about the past and to the repositioning of Frota’s figure within the symbolic disputes that marked the final phase of the regime.
