A conjuntura política dos anos iniciais da Era Vargaso uso instrumental do jornal O Radical na construção da narrativa oficial sobre momentos críticos (1932-1934)

Resumo

This thesis aims to analyze the strategies used by the periodical O Radical – created in the capital of the country with the purpose of acting as a spokesperson for the so-called Revolution of 1930 –, specifically regarding the coverage of the key issues of institutional reorganization faced in this initial phase of the Vargas Era. I investigated the importance of the newspaper for the Provisional Government (1932-1934) to construct its official narrative on critical conjunctures (CAPOCCIA; KELEMEN, 2007) that could threaten him during the implementation of the political project itself. In line with the method prescribed by David Mayhew (1975), the thematic identification of critical moments was operationalized through the consultation of secondary literature. As a result, I mapped a total of 939 publications, whose examination of the content revealed the range of instruments mobilized by politically engaged newspapers to forge a public agenda favorable to the government's objectives in the face of the political uncertainties of that time. In addition to the publication of opinionated articles addressing issues dear to the government, we will see how the use of literary resources, everyday references and eminently populist rhetoric served to fix the image of revolutionaries in the defense of the people against the deposed oligarchic elite. It is about rescuing the importance of the study of journalism to understand how the memory of Brazilian political institutions was built at an inflection point in the trajectory of representative government in the country (ZULINI; RICCI, 2020).
