Resumo

This dissertation focuses on the issues surrounding female suffrage at the beginning of the 20th century in Brazil, with its anchor being the moment post the 1932 electoral code, from 1933, to 1937 the beginning of the Estado Novo. The aim of this research is to better understand the social context of the condition of women in this period, to then discuss and analyse the issues surrounding the historiography of feminism in Brazil and the reasons behind the support of the enfranchisement of women at that time through the analysis of newspapers. This dissertation seeks to provide a counterpoint to classical narratives about female enfranchisement and moreover the history of feminism in Brazil, shedding light on different agents involved in the issue of female suffrage. It endeavours to show how different to a so-called democratic progress of the 1930s, female suffrage was seen as a tool - by those in power and the catholic church - of conservative and authoritarian strategy. Whilst showing that for many, female emancipation was seen as something much more than mere political rights.
