Nova Iguaçu em transejornalismo, política e visões de cidade (1945-1964)

Resumo

This thesis discusses the relationship between journalism, the city and social modernization in a peripheral territory. It has as object the disputes between the weekly newspapers Correio da lavoura and Correio de Maxambomba, as well as the trajectory of its owners, between the years 1946 and 1964. Founded on March 22, 1917 by Silvino Hypóltio de Azeredo Coutinho, in the headquarter district of Iguassu, the weekly Correio da Lavoura was born from the initiative of a black scholar inserted in the midst of the local elite. With farming, hygiene and education as a motto, the owner-founder made his newspaper a platform capable of reverberating the demands and initiatives around citriculture, the main economic activity in Nova Iguaçu between the 1920s and 1940s. Silvino de Azeredo wrote the story of his family on the pages of the weekly so that images and texts of his descendants acted as a successful model of being black in Iguassu‘s society. The Correio de Maxambomba, on the other hand, was founded by Dionísio Bassi on December 18, 1955, with the objective of describing the socioeconomic and political Ongoing changes in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, with emphasis on phenomena such as land allotment, migrations and nascent industrialization. Bassi joined newspapers in the federal capital and made his experience at the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) a steppingstone for Iguassuan political life. Councilman elected by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) for two terms (1946-1949 / 1955-1958), promoted the idea of a city based on developmentalism and meeting popular agendas. The thesis makes use of a varied set of primary sources to reconstruct the history of this tension between traditional and modern elites, with emphasis on the existing collections of these weeklies, Oral History interviews, consultations with local archives and police collections
