Resumo

Founded in 1902, the Tribuna de Petropolis has accumulated over 108 years of publication in the city of Petropolis, state of Rio de Janeiro. Being a local newspaper, sold only within the limits of the city, its existence for more than a century reflects the efforts of its owners and directors to overcome crises and maintain the symbolic power of identity over the city. This research examines three main periods of the newspaper and its relationship with Petropolis. In the beginning of the 20th century, Tribuna represented the search for a new political position for the Group of Petropolis, after the loss of the capital to Niteroi. In the middle of the century, between 1950 and 1970, the newspaper runs through a deep crisis and declares bankruptcy. In the final decades of the 20th century, the newspaper is reorganized and, under the command of heirs of the Imperial Family, builds a new relationship of representation and identification with the city of Petropolis. As a newspaper-company and a part of a major conglomerate of communication, the Tribuna de Petropolis reaches the 21st century and establishes itself as an institution guided by strategic choices and administrative decisions, as well as by a straight relationship with the local market for advertising.
