Resumo

The newly adopted European Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) presents both opportunities and challenges for producing countries. Nations dependent on commodity exports and suffering from deforestation issues, such as Brazil, are the most likely to be affected by the provisions of the new European regulation. In this context, in order to identify the main regulatory challenges faced by affected countries, this Policy Brief provides a comprehensive analysis of the EUDR’s indirect implementation in Brazil and its challenges. Brazil is a major producer and exporter of regulated commodities. Thus, the country is expected to be affected by the EUDR. This work is divided into three sections. The first section analyses the EUDR and its main challenges considering the regulation’s indirect implementation in Brazil. The second section addresses some unanswered questions regarding the EUDR, unravelling what still needs to be done for its effective implementation. In the third section, this Policy discusses possible scenarios and brings recommendations on what are the next steps to be taken. In the fourth and last section, the Policy concludes by highlighting its recommendations vis-à-vis the challenges found.
