Resumo

This paper aims at an appraisal of the scientific production, achieved from the perspective of social sciences applied to health. The author uses for it the concept of Collective Health, indicating an area of knowledge circumscribed by the specific nature of its subject and by the employed methodology. The chosen subject is the "collective" which, while heterogeneous, always refers to the social, as a field for analysis and intervention. As to methodology, one starts from the controversial hypothesis of the social field being constituted because a historicstructural method was adopted. An analysis is made of the following themes, under which may be subsumed the scientific production specific of the field: ·       State, Social Policies, Accumulation and Legitimacy; ·       Health Institutions and the Social Organization of ·       Medical Practice; ·       Capitalism, Work Process and Reproduction of Manpower; ·       From Communitarian Medicine to Urban Social Movements.  Finally, a recent retrospect of investigations within the area is presented involving institutions, thematic fields, human resources, governmental programs and means for disclosure of the scientific production.
