A panorama of the decentralization of the Bolivian health system

Resumo
The article analyses the strategy employed in the decentralization of health services in Bolivia, a process started in 1986 within a context marked by democratization, parallel to the adoption of an economic policy of liberalism. An analysis of the centralist tradition of the country, of the failure in early experiences for democratization of the sector, of the high degree of fragmentation observed in the services, as well as of the strategies adopted by the different political agents, points out the limits and the impasses of the decentralizing proposal.
