Resumo

"Litio en Sudamérica" (Fornillo et al., 2019) is a pivotal work for understanding the complexity of the lithium issue in Latin America and globally, particularly in the three countries housing most of the planet's reserves, known as the "Lithium Triangle": Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile. According to the authors, lithium provides insight into the foundational challenges of the civilizational transition: the socio-ecological crisis stemming from climate change, the Anthropocene, and the economic transformations of green capitalism. It represents both an opportunity to forge new paths and a risk of perpetuating existing social inequalities. The research navigates between the global and the local, delving into lithium value chains, the intersections of science, industry, and politics, socioterritorial consequences, and possibilities for regional integration to influence the global market. It concludes by emphasizing the need for political action articulated with public science to build pathways towards post-extractive scenarios, highlighting the importance of a critical geopolitics of climate change and underscoring the central role of lithium in this context.
