Resumo

This research examines the social reintegration process of formerly incarcerated individuals in the Federal District of Brazil, using the Ressocializa DF Program as an empirical case. Based on a qualitative approach that combines fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) with in-depth interviews, the study explores how structural, social, and personal conditions interact to sustain reintegration trajectories. Findings indicate that reintegration is not a single event, but a dynamic process that depends on the convergence of material stability, social support, and individual agency capacity. Complementarily, the qualitative analysis revealed that the stigma–recognition axis operates as a critical dimension not fully captured by traditional reintegration models. Additionally, triangulation results confirmed equifinality (more than one causal path can lead to reintegration) and causal asymmetry (the configuration associated with the absence of the outcome is not the mirror opposite of the presence), showing that weakened personal agency tends to interrupt or hinder reintegration processes, especially when not accompanied by structural and social support. Policy recommendations highlight the need for continuous monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, longitudinal post-release follow-up, and recognition of the institutional and structural limits of reintegration policies. Overall, the research provides a methodological contribution by demonstrating the applicability of fsQCA in contexts of complex causality and small-N designs; a theoretical contribution by articulating critical criminology perspectives with configurational empirical analysis; and a practical contribution by offering evidence to inform public policies for social reintegration in Brazil.
