Resumo
Prison overcrowding has been affecting Brazil at alarming levels for the last decades. This thesis explores the dynamics of imprisonment in Brazil starting from the historical and sociological roots of punishment to the analysis of the current situation. This text looks at the Brazilian prison system using data from Infopen and examines the problem of prison overcrowding. The evaluation of public policy options addressing overcrowding concludes how the problem could be categorized as a wicked problem and that it is difficult to suggest a direct solution in the current socioeconomic context characterizing Brazil.
