Práticas integrativas e complementares em saúde no SUShistórico de implementação e perspectivas no Brasil e em Belo Horizonte

Resumo

The article is an integrative review of the literature on Integrative and Complementary Health Practices (PICS), focusing on the national context, with a special emphasis on Belo Horizonte. The review considers the PICS’ millennia-old context and history before their institutionalization, through the recognition by the World Health Organization, and the implementation of Law No. 8,080, of September 19, 1990. To this end, a search was conducted in the Virtual Health Library (BVS). The review considered original articles, theses, dissertations, systematic reviews, and non-experimental studies published in Portuguese in Brazil from 2014 to 2023. In the end, 20 articles were included. There is an important need to recover the context of the emergence of these practices, even before they were given this nomenclature, as well as to trace the path of their implementation in the Unified Health System in Brazil. The review highlights Brazil’s pioneering role, the importance of different actors in the process of implementing and strengthening the PNPIC, and the challenges of expanding access to these practices. The case of Belo Horizonte demonstrates an offering of PICS that covers the entire municipality, which is essential for ensuring access, with a strong connection to primary health care. However, there is a low diversification of the practices offered and other challenges to be addressed to expand this offering.
