Resumo
Sustainable food production is essential in the face of climate change and biodiversity loss on a global scale. There is a conflict between economic growth and the responsible use of natural resources, influenced both by public policies and individual choices. In pastoral ecosystems, food production is marked by extensive animal husbandry, which is the main economic activity, playing a social and cultural role in these territories. In Brazil, the pastoral ecosystem of the Pampa biome, which occupies 2% of the national territory and houses 9% of the country’s biodiversity, faces the dispute between extensive livestock farming and the production of agricultural commodities. This dispute results in increased degradation of natural pastures, with impacts on the health of people, animals and the environment, in addition to contributing to the loss of biodiversity. The objective of this study is to analyze the connections and disconnections between public policies and the environment in livestock farming in the Brazilian Pampa and their impacts on human animal and environmental health. To this end, interviews were carried out with institutional representatives and livestock farmers between 2022 and 2023. The results showed difficulties in accessing human health and improvements in animal health, but with challenges for livestock farmers in complying with standards
