Panorama da educação nos estados que compõem a Amazônia Legal

Resumo

This paper presents an analysis of the educational situation in the States of North region, Maranhão and Mato Grosso, which constitute what is called Amazônia Legal. The period of the analysis contains the years between 1996 and 1998, focusing in the elementary and high school education, due to the main importance of them, as stated in the Federal Constitution of 1988, where it is stresses the public mandatory supply for the elementary education and the growing role of the government for high school education.
 This paper conducts an analytical approach divided in fours items allowing comparisons between the various regions and with the average of the country, through the analysis of the representing indicator. Therefore one could have a better and clearer view of the education sector, which is one of the most important matter for any social public policy.
 The results obtained through the analysis of the indicators, show that the region of Amazônia Legal presents the worst educational situation if compared to other geographic regions. On the other hand, the analysis also shows that the situation is improving on the average despite the fact that it presents great variations between States, often contraring the average variation trend.
