Resumo

Research about race issues in Brazil usually follows one of three lines of thought: a) the one that assumes a racial democracy; b) the one that links race issues to social classes issues, subordinating the former to the latter; and c) the one that assumes that race is the main determinant on the socioeconomic situation of the individuals. Independently of the line of thought chosen to anchor the study, to portrait the situation of blacks and mixed-race individuals with respect to the other ethnic groups is a first step in understanding the extension of the social and racial gaps in present Brazil. Whatever the explanation may be, what can be presently seen in Brazil, is a large discrepancy as a function of race/skin color: between the situation of whites and Asians on the one hand and blacks and mixed-race individuals on the other. Data show that even in the most basic level of citizenship, i.e., the access to a job with quality, though not as large as in the past, race differentials still persist. There is a wide gap even when controlling by schooling and gender. This paper analyses, disaggregated by race/skin color and gender, data on labor market participation from PNADs in the 1992-2001 period. PNAD is a household survey conducted annually by IBGE, the Brazilian Central Statistical Office. Information on activity rate, unemployment and proportion of formal ties (about half of the Brazilian labor force is part of the informal market) are analyzed. Besides a descriptive analysis we adjust a generalized linear model assuming a binomial distribution and the logit as link function, to the activity rates, unemployment rates and probability of belonging to the formal market. As explanatory variables we used gender, individual age, race/skin color, years of schooling. Individual age and years of schooling are fitted as polynomials. The text also quantifies the gender/race gap with respect to the insertion in the labor market.
