Maré: a invenção de um bairro

Resumo

This case study is about the construction of social identities in the neighborhood named Maré. This research describes the formation process of the favelas in Rio de Janeiro City, particularly of Favela da Maré, since its beginning until the creation of the neighborhood, instituted by the municipal public power, in the XXXª Região Administrativa, that encircle 15 localities, generally recognized in the City as Conjunto de Favelas da Maré or Complexo da Maré. It discusses the dwellers’ reactions to the fact that the neighborhood to have been created from the favela, a space whose representations are chiefly associated with everything that is against the existence of the City. It analyzes the actions enterprisinged by Centro de Estudos e Ações Solidárias da Maré (CEASM), a non governmental organization, in the sense of “invent” the neighborhood, based on the appreciation of the place and its history; on the dwellers` memories; and the protagonism of the own local social agents. The study is founded on the oral narratives analysis and on the documental and bibliographical research. Keywords: Memory. Identity. Maré. Favela. Neighborhood. CEASM.
