Resumo

This thesis investigates the process of the consecration of Machado de Assis as Brazil’s national writer during the 1930s, particularly the celebrations marking the centenary of his birth in 1939. It undertakes a historiographical discussion on the consecration of literary authors, focusing on Machado de Assis and the 1939 commemorations. The study draws on decrees, reports, speeches, and correspondence from the mediators involved in those celebrations, based on materials from the Gustavo Capanema Archive (FGV-CPDOC). It examines how Machado de Assis came to be enthroned as the greatest Brazilian writer of modern times, revealing the image of Machado de Assis constructed in the twentieth century through the operations that contributed to his consecration.
