Resumo
The purpose of the present paper is to undertake an exploratory analysis of therelationship between research and development (R&D) intensity and firm size for agroup of Brazilian firms for the years of 1993 and 1994, and also for the mostrepresentative industrial sectors. In this sense, we make use of the rank transformmethodology as applied by Holmes et. Alii (1991). The results are compatible with theones obtained for American firms for 1985, suggesting that there is a negativerelationship between R&D intensity and firm size. From the sectoral analysis, somedifferences were verified, such contrasts are attributable to distinct methodologies ofindustry strattification or to specific structural characteristics of those industrial sectors inBrazil.
