Resumo
PURPOSE –Currently, the subject work-life balance has been extensively discussed inside the companies, especially for be considered a no financial benefit which impacts straightly the professional`s quality of life. This material aims to evaluate the value of this subject for Y generation and understands its prioritization along theircareer. Considering this, companies can point your bets on incentive programs related to work-life balance as a talent retention strategy. Also, this work wants to understand if the balance between professional and personal life is visually more relevant to Y generation than to X generation, indeed. DESIGN / METHODOLOGY –This research is based on the multi-method and is split in two phases: Bibliographic and Quantitative. Primally was performed a deep analyzes of the existent bibliography around the subject which allows the built of 5 hypotheses. After this, during December 2020, an online data was collected through a survey tool available on Google Forms, from where was taken a conventional and not a probabilistic sample of177 valid answers. The survey questionnaire was adapted from a preliminary study which was built and validated by Altoé (2014) and was applied among a sample of professionals from South of Brazil. The current research is focused on professionals who current live in the metropolitan zone of Rio de Janeiro. The adapted questionnaire was split in 3 parts: 1) fifteenquestions related on the perception of circumstances that affects personal and professional life; 2) threequestions related on the importance ofwork, family and entertainment and 3) thirteenpersonal questions in order to identify the profile and characteristics of respondents. After the gathering of results, these were structured and analyzed through a descriptive statistic in order to prove or not, the hypotheses ranked in the first phase. RESULTS –The collected results indicated that the balance between professional and personal life is an important factor to generation Y, specially to women from this generation. However, the result did not prove the influence of this variant to the career for most of individuals from this generation. Considering this, companies should analyze carefully the implementation of this kind of incentive inside their retention plans. In addition, the information founded enabled to confirm that generation X cares about the balance between professional and personal life as much as generation Y.
 RESEARCH LIMITATIONS –This actual study has 4 important restrictions: 1) Location: Professionals chosen are from metropolitan zone of Rio de Janeiro, 2) Economic condition: The results cannot have a general interpretation once there is a strong discussion about the change of behavior due to samples’ economic condition, 3) Timeline frame: The survey was applied in the same timeline for all respondents which brings different moments of life and career from generations Y and X. Future researches with the same respondents will be able to show if the priority of work-life balancein people career suffers any change along the time, no matter which generation is and 4) Sample size: Considering all population from generation X and Y, the sample is considered small to generalize the obtained results. However, the data base from this research will be released in order to contribute to wider studies. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS –From this study, companies will be able to understand if they should prioritize incentive programs related to work-life balance as part of a talent retention package.SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS –As has evidenced throughout this work, the life quality and balance of professional and personal life as a consequence, should be a subject explored and motivated not only by companies but also by public and government institutions. Therefore, this works tends to contribute and enlighten this subject so important for professionals.ORIGINALITY –This is a subject studied mainly in developed countries and should be more spread into emergingnations that need public incentives. That is the reason of the relevance of this study in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro.
