Resumo
The case of the city of São João Marcos, a prominent Brazilian city of the coffee period in Brazil; destroyed at the time of the dictatorship of the Estado Novo due to the severe crisis of water and electricity, was seen in this research within a historical panorama of long duration. The central objective of working with a long-term history has made it possible to build a more detailed analysis of this case. As the history of São João Marcos embraces the context that involves the pain of the former residents for the loss of the city and the foundation of the Archaeological and Environmental Park of São João Marcos, currently, it was possible to rediscuss the concept of collective memory of Maurice Halbwachs. The reopening of the discussion of this concept made it possible to work with the hypothesis that there is, although more than 80 years after the disappearance of the city, a collective memory associated with the case of this city, which, at the same time, is backfed by the memories that the former residents transmitted to their descendants. Combining bibliographic, hemerographic and documentary research with an empirical experiment, digital data collection and the use of the geolocation feature of Facebook's social network, it was possible to perform the analysis both by the history of the extinction of the city and by the current historical moment, starting from the way the descendants and residents of the region near the archaeological site perceive the park to the detriment of the perceptions of visitors / tourists. The results of the digital empirical experiment indicate that there is still a collective memory with latent repercussion associated with the relatives of the former residents of São João Marcos. The evidence of the empirical study, too, points out that even with the construction of the archaeological park the conflict, created in the past with the destruction of the city by The Rio Light Company, was not solved or mitigated in the present.
