Resumo
The aim this paper is to analyze the reasons for wages differentials in five manufacturing branches of the Greater São Paulo – Communication and Electronics, Transport Material, Chemicals, Furniture, leather and Furs – in the 1987. The theoretical approaches were given by the human capital, labor market segmentation and efficiency-wage theories. The empirical procedure was an estimation of five earnings functions, one for each manufacturing branch, based on a sample composed of about 3000 individually disaggregated observation proceeded from Rais (Relação Anual de Informações Sociais). The variables associated with labor supply were statistically significant for all branches and the results were also consistent with the labor market segmentation theories and efficiency-wage theories.
