Resumo
Objective – This study conducts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to investigate the relationship between Board Gender Diversity (BGD) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance, identifying theoretical mechanisms, patterns, gaps, and emerging trends. Methodology – A rigorous SLR was conducted using Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases (2010-2025) via a structured four-phase protocol. Inclusion criteria focused on empirical, peer-reviewed studies (JIF Q1-Q4) on BGD and ESG. The final sample comprised 26 articles (2018-2025), with data systematized using the Sci-Space platform. Results – Analysis confirms a predominantly positive association between BGD and ESG performance, though effects are non-uniform. BGD primarily correlates with improved Governance; managerial women impact Social performance more. The Environmental dimension shows inconsistent results, dependent on critical mass and institutional context. Rule of Law amplifies BGD's positive effect on environmental disclosure, while Gender Equality strengthens female governance engagement. Mandatory quotas attenuate, and mandatory ESG reporting can reverse, the expected positive BGD effect. Limitations – Limitations include studies' concentration on large listed companies, predominance of quantitative approaches, and focus on developed economies, limiting insights into diverse institutional contexts and emerging markets. Applicability – Promoting BGD is a governance strategy to strengthen corporate sustainability, reduce reputational risks, and align with socio-environmental demands. BGD's effectiveness is conditional on sufficient critical mass and institutional arrangements enabling substantive influence. Contributions to Society – This review contributes to the social and political debate on gender equity and corporate sustainability. Female leadership aligns with SDG 5, and diverse companies achieve better market valuations, highlighting gender equity as a strategic competitive issue. Originality – This study's originality lies in employing SLR to rigorously consolidate and systematize heterogeneous and divergent empirical evidence on BGD's influence on boards and ESG practices, offering a critical and transparent synthesis.
