Resumo
The Tapajós region has been undergoing a transformation process since 1928 whichhas been intensified by public development policies. This process was marked by inexpressive social benefits, thetransformation of the ecosystem and hazards to human health. In 1996, the ENID policy for integration anddevelopment was established according to the logistics of national agribusiness. This paper explores and analyzesthe public development policy and its effects on the environment and human health. For this purpose, bothhistorical and political bibliographical research, including official documents, and direct observation were employed. Past policies have engendered positive social change but have increased environmental pressure, whichaffected the health of citizens. Those experiences bring the need for reflection and and expansion of the technicaldiscussion about health in the Region, especially in light of the present effects of the ENID policy.
