Correspondentes bancários e microcrédito no Brasiltecnologia bancária e ampliação dos serviços financeiros para a população de baixa renda

Resumo

Two important phenomena have recently been observed in financial markets: microcredit and correspondent banking. Microcredit, highlighted by the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank in 2006 'for their efforts to create economic and social development from below,' refers to the development of microfinance markets. It is increasingly recognized as a powerful tool for income generation and poverty reduction in developing countries. Correspondent banking, which has been particularly successful in Brazil, is related to the recent growth in the use of so-called banking correspondents as a retail channel for banks, resulting in lower costs and greater diffusion for participating financial institutions. Although both microcredit and correspondent banking were created to supply financial services to lower income populations, they have very few links to each other in practice. This study presents an investigation on the potential of banking correspondents as a distribution channel for microcredit. Qualitative interviews were conducted with several actors from both the microcredit and the correspondent banking universes. The results suggest that adaptations to the actual dominant model of correspondent banking could bring opportunities to banks, microfinance organizations and the low income population that is in need of credit in Brazil.
