Resumo
In a country like Brazil, where the State takes on the responsibility of providing the entire population with access to health, with a complementary action of the private sector, it is essential to evaluate how the recent movement of consolidation of the supplementary health market is impacting the financial sustainability of the health system. This study sought to assess whether there is a relationship between the degree of market concentration and the financial performance of Health Plan Operators (HPO), as well as to examine whether the degree of market concentration can influence the prices charged by OPS. Four metrics were used: the Herfindahl–Hirschman index (HHI) to measure the degree of market concentration, the EBIT Margin and the Net Income Margin (NIM) to measure financial performance and the Average Ticket to estimate the prices charged by HPO over the years of the study: from 2018 to 2020. To assess the impact of market concentration on the financial performance of HPO, the quantitative method was used through the application of simple linear regressions combining the HHI with the EBIT Margin and NIM, the analysis of the effects of market concentration on the price of HPOs was carried out by comparing the percentage evolution of the average ticket. The results showed that the average EBIT and the average NIM of the OPS decrease as the HHI of the market where the OPS is headquartered increases, as well as that the average EBIT is lower in regions with greater market concentration (HHi above 2,500).
