Resumo

This thesis aims to analyze the contribution of the Romanian/Brazilian anthropologist Berta Gleizer Ribeiro (1924-1997) to Brazilian Anthropology in the 20th century, with emphasis on her contribution to Ecological Anthropology and studies of human adaptability to the humid tropics. The thesis also brings an analysis of the mutual contribution between both and points out that it is possible to theoretically and methodologically separate the works of Berta and Darcy Ribeiro, demystifying the idea that Berta wrote books and texts by Darcy and that she lived in the shadow of husband. From oral history interviews with former professional colleagues, personal friends, former students and advisees, and the consultation of the anthropologist's complete bibliography, as well as consultation of biographies, memorials and archives about her, it was possible to approach the life -work of Berta Ribeiro and conclude that, among his many contributions to Anthropology, Museology and History, he contributed with his studies on the TechEconomy of Brazilian indigenous people, a concept he coined to explain the production of Brazilian indigenous people, and contributed with the proposition of using social use of indigenous technology with a view to a more sustainable exploitation of natural resources and the preservation of the memory and “know-how” of these peoples. Berta used the study of the material culture and visual art of Brazilian indigenous peoples as a guiding principle to approach themes such as the domain of fauna and flora, and the agricultural and water management of Brazilian indigenous peoples. Her works anticipate current debates regarding the conservation of forest biodiversity, showing how much the knowledge of indigenous peoples has a lot to teach us about sustainability, living with the environment and respect for nature.
