Resumo

Within the health system, hospitals are characterized as highly expenditure-intensive entities. This circumstance, as an isolated fact, should bring about the development of a greater number ofstudies on production, productivity, size of personnel staffs and quality of services, so that some parameters could be defined, thus permiting needed corrections, capable of turning hospitals into effective, useful and efficient institutions. The present research, involving eight big-sized hospitals, intends to know the productivity of these units by using the ratio between production (daily consultations, patients/day, number of examinations, amount of washings by kg, sterilized packages, maintenance, square meters cleaned and number of meals prepared) and the number of employees per area.
