The blue and green network in spatial planning approximations and distances

With an expansion in the idea of sustainable development since the 1990s, there hasbeen a strong tendency to incorporate the environmental dimension into the territorial planning policies. Onseveral levels, a transposition of the concepts in natural sciences, many of them related to the formulations ofLandscape Ecology, has been identified. The proposed “green and blue network” in Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France,emerged within this context, and has served as a reference for the development of a recent planning process ofthe Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte. The aim of this text is to examine these two projects, detailing thecontexts in which they were undertaken together with the contents, and while maintaining a critical distance,to discuss the possibilities and merits, as well as the limitations and contradictions.
