Resumo

Social security, health and equity in Brazil: elements for updating the debate This article discusses issues that should be considered on the necessary updating of the debate on social security in Brazil, with special attention to healthcare. It presents the precepts under which social security was included in the 1988 Constitution and discusses controversial aspects of the last two social security reforms as well as some of the improvements and limitations of the Brazilian Unified Health System during its 13 years, in order to show that the debate on social security must be updated having its focus on the reduction of inequalities.
