Social and environmental dynamics, conditioning factors and impacts in the evolution of the Brazilian agricultural frontier

Resumo

This paper analyses the social and environmental impacts of the expansion of the agricultural frontier in Brazil on the post-War period. This is done in the context of the evolution of the country's agriculture and economy. It distinguishes between the import substitution industrialization period between 1950 and 1968, and the conservative modernization period between 1969 and 1990. The paper establishes the main factors in the process of incorporation of land in the frontier in both periods and evaluates its main detrimental consequences, both social and environmental. The latter are indicated in terms of the country's main agrosystems.
