Resumo
This study examines the relationship between politics and economics in the State of Rio de Janeiro between 1995 and 2024. It is worth noting that the limited economic analysis of Rio de Janeiro may be one of the factors that helps explain the political and economic problems faced by the state over the past few decades. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Rio de Janeiro is the Brazilian state with the lowest GDP growth in almost forty years. Between 1986 and 2022, Rio de Janeiro's economic activity grew, in real terms, 1.6% per year. During the same period, Brazil's growth rate was 2.3%. Several variables may help explain the poor economic performance of Rio de Janeiro in recent years. Among these variables, we can consider Rio de Janeiro's political variables, national political uncertainty, domestic macroeconomic variables, state macroeconomic variables, and international macroeconomic variables. The first part of the research is to estimate, through an econometric model, the extent to which political and economic variables help explain the poor economic performance of the state of Rio de Janeiro, focusing on the period since 1995, when the economy had already stabilized following the “Plano Real”. And the second part consists of a historical, economic, and political analysis of the State of Rio de Janeiro. And it analyzes how this weak economic performance and the state's political instability are not the same in the capital. In summary, two main findings of this study are that i) politics – or factors linked to it, such as corruption, poor management, among others – also have a share of responsibility in the (weak) economic performance of the State of Rio de Janeiro; ii) and that, despite having the same name – Rio de Janeiro – both the political and economic history of the city of Rio is considerably different from that of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
