Resumo

This paper analyzes working-time patterns in Brazil using microdata from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Continua), in the context of the recent debate on reducing the legal maximum working week and eliminating the 6×1 work schedule. The results show that employees with a formal labor contract remain among the groups with the longest working hours, with a relative deterioration over the period analyzed in terms of the incidence of long working hours, monthly earnings, and hourly earnings. The probability of being employed in long-hour jobs is associated with individual and sectoral characteristics, especially educational attainment and sector of activity. The transition analysis suggests that long working hours are not a decisive factor in hiring without a formal contract, while informal workers tend to transition into formal jobs with shorter working hours. The results indicate that changes in legal working-time limits may have effects beyond workers directly covered by the legislation, by influencing the relative attractiveness of formal employment and the labor-market participation decisions of informal and inactive workers.
