Resumo

This research aims to study the Brazilian phonographic industry from the perspective of the construction of industrial modernity in Brazil, which was marked by the conciliation between dominant classes and dependence on foreign capital, not by chance one of the main characteristics of our record industry. We will study from the implementation of the first record factories to the formation of a multinational oligopoly at the end of the military regime, a period of strong stimulus to consumption in which the record was consolidated in the culture and economy of the country, transforming Brazil into one of the largest music consumer markets in the world. The development of the sector was also characterized by the activation of the State to defend its interests, especially after the creation of the Brazilian Association of Record Producers (ABPD). Artists also systematically sought to get the government to accept their demands, but at key moments for the relationship between artists and record companies, the class did not have the political strength to achieve structural changes. The policy of encouraging foreign investment, a fundamental aspect of the economic model of the military regime, favored the expansion of multinational record companies, which excluded the national business community from the market and limited the achievements of the artistic class in the field of copyright.
