Resumo
The research work reported here aimed at characterizing the internationalization processes of Brazilian small and medium-sized enterprises. Analysis of a sample of 52 Brazilian exporting SMEs showed that their international expansion has characteristics that are peculiar and in many aspects in disaccord with what is described in the international literature on the internationalization of SMEs. The interpretation given here to these results leads to a new understanding of this phenomenon and raises unprecedented issues for further investigation.
