Resumo
This article is an analysis of the expansion of tourism in the Brazilian Northeastern region, disclosed by a series of indicators, followed by a comparison between this growth and the living conditions prevailing locally. The study brought about a revision of theoretical concepts on tourism, as well as of the way in which a programmed State intervention has encouraged these touristic activities. Although tourism is considered an "adequate technology" for the Northeast, the study stresses the necessity of an urgent action from the State, in order that the results of touristic initiatives be more equitably distributed and, at the same time, cause less damage to the region as a whole.
