Resumo
Objective: The main objective of this study is to identify what brings together and what distances the interest of researchers and professors in relation to the incentives sourced from the fostering of applied research carried out by the institution/university. Methodology: Literature review, document analysis of research projects highlighted in the period between 2015 and 2018 by the internal fostering network and in-depth interviews with 17 leaders (researchers and professors) of part of these projects, using content analysis techniques to capture their perceptions on the topic. Results: Factors that positively or negatively have an affect on the engagement to applied research calls for proposals were identified: transparency in the fostering and evaluation processes, balance between incentives and reputational risk. However, the advancement brought by the creation of the internal fostering network is recognized, especially in terms of innovation. In addition, it is possible to build a reputation for the institution/university in the most applied field of research and increase its participation in the debate on public policy development [in the most economic field,] as well as expand its international projection. Limitations: There is a bias caused by the previous selection filter of “highlighted” projects, which was considered in the analysis (and which produces initial information about which “criteria” are most valued). Practical contributions: Based on these results, the institution's/university's internal fostering network, researchers, professors and those interested in the subject can collaborate to find solutions in order to reduce the distance and increase interest in more applied research. Social nature contributions: based on learning about the fostering of applied research, a greater participation of society is expected in the identification of demands. Originality: Previous works with the same focus and objective were not identified in the study.
