Resumo
Objective – The present study aims to present an overview of the credit card market in Brazil after the enactment of Law 12.865/2013, when the State began to intervene in the relationship between private entities to foster competition and efficiency in the sector and reduce market failures. Methodology – An exploratory and descriptive research was conducted through a bibliographic and documental survey of qualitative and quantitative information on the evolution of the credit card market in Brazil, covering the period between 2013 and 2023. The research considered competition among card networks, issuers, and acquirers; performance in terms of base, transactions, revenue, and acceptance; and changes in pricing structure. The data were collected from files and reports published by the Central Bank and studies by CardMonitor, a company specialized in structured analyses of the payment methods market. Findings – The results indicate that state regulation in the credit card market has fostered competition and financial inclusion. The number of issuers and acquirers has increased, and the concentration of revenue is gradually decreasing. There has been an expansion in product access. The pricing structure has been impacted by a reduction in the discount rate, but the interchange fee passed on to issuers has not yet followed the same reduction. Practical implications – The research can be useful for professionals and investors from financial institutions and their clients, who include both the companies that sell goods and services via credit cards and the consumers who purchase these resources using this payment instrument, as well as researchers interested in understanding and delving deeper into the electronic payment market. Social implications – The study allows for an understanding of the dynamics of the credit card market, where both sides, consumers and merchants, depend on each other to obtain the benefits derived from the use of this payment instrument. Originality – Considering the scarcity of academic literature on the landscape of the credit card market following state intervention in payment methods, this study advances research on the effects of regulation on this market.
